Medical Lab Technician Group Lead - Warner Robins, GA - Monday-Friday 20:30PM - 07:00AM (Rotational Weekends)

Perform test procedures of moderate/high complexity requiring some independent judgement and the use of various instrumentation under the direction of senior laboratory personnel in those specialties in which they are qualified by education, training and experience. Assist Lab Supervisor and serve as a technical resource for the department. 


  • Perform assigned tests under the direction of senior personnel in accordance with applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) ensuring that applicable quality control requirements are met. 
  • Verify and release results of limited tests under supervision of senior personnel. 
  • Actively support and comply with laboratory policies. 
  • Adhere to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround time of results including STATS or critical results to clients. 
  • Pull pending reports daily to ensure test results are reported in accordance with departmental turn-around times. 
  • Monitor reagent stock and ensure reagents/test kits have received dates, expiration dates and if applicable opened dates. 
  • Calibrate pipettes and prep instruments. 
  • Responsible for informing supervisory personnel of all problems associated with the proper performance of test procedures while also working to solve the problems by troubleshooting the instruments. 
  • Assist Lab Supervisor by monitoring workflow to meet testing schedules; distributing and reviewing work assignments; training employees in laboratory techniques; resolving work-related problems of staff; and providing input for performance appraisals and disciplinary actions. 
  • Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional and sanitary condition. 
  • Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate. 
  • Adheres to all established CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA and laboratory safety requirements. 
  • Required to use (a) personal protective equipment, (b) engineering controls and/or (c) work practice controls as directed by management. 
  • Answer questions from clients or other lab personnel, if applicable. 
  • Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections, if needed. 
  • Other duties as assigned. This is not an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities, but rather a general description of work performed by the position. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Work Experience:  

Depends on education. Qualified by one of the following: 

  • AAS Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution plus three years experience  - or – 
  • On or before April 25, 1995, high school graduate or equivalent and successful completion of a military medical laboratory training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory  Specialist (Laboratory Technician) plus three years experience.  Candidates who complete military training after the specified date may be considered on a case by case basis – or – 
  • AS or BS Degree in a biological, chemical or physical science from an accredited institution, plus four years full-time testing experience (one-year training, three years testing) in a clinical lab setting – or- 
  • Successful completion of 60 semester hours of college coursework including 24 semester hours in chemistry and biology (6 hours in Chemistry, 6 hours in Biology, and 12 additional hours in any combination of Biology, Chemistry or Medical technology courses), plus four years of full-time testing experience(one-year training, three years testing) in a clinical lab setting. 

Foreign educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from IERF (International Education Research Foundation).  The United States educated candidates must provide a detailed original transcript.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects: Objects 1 to 10 pounds are lifted and carried frequently; objects 11 to 25 pounds are lifted and carried occasionally; objects 36 to 50 pounds are seldom lifted or carried and objects over 50 pounds are not to be lifted or carried without assistance. 
  • Ability to stand and work at the bench for long periods of time. 
  • Frequent walking and/or standing. 
  • May be required to use a wide variety of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments and apparatuses all of which demand significant manual dexterity. 

Knowledge:

  • Basic theoretical and operational job knowledge in clinical testing. 
  • Knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures. 

Skills:

  • Must be detail-oriented, have the ability to work independently, establish work priorities and to handle several tasks simultaneously for maximum department efficiency. 
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to deal courteously and effectively with supervisors, co-workers and clients. 
  • Communication skills necessary to handle telephone inquiries from clients. 
  • Ability to deal with client information in a confidential manner. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) and Laboratory Information Systems.
