Job Description


The Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Health Systems & Strategic Partnerships, serves as a senior enterprise medical leader responsible for advancing clinical partnerships with hospitals and health systems and providing medical leadership across mergers, acquisitions, co-lab (collaborative lab solutions) and strategic investments. This role bridges external engagement and internal strategy, ensuring clinical rigor, credibility, and value creation across all growth initiatives. 

The CMO will act as the primary medical voice in health systems engagement and a key advisor in evaluating, structuring, and integrating strategic opportunities.

The position is expected to be based in Secaucus, NJ (hybrid), with consideration given to placement at other Quest Diagnostics laboratory locations. 

Pay Range:$500,000 - $535,000 + 45% AIP Target + Long-Term Incentive

Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications are obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Successful candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance bonus compensation.

Responsibilities:

Health Systems Engagement & External Partnerships

  • Serve as the senior medical leader interfacing with C-suite leaders in health systems, academic medical centers, and physician organizations associated with health systems

  • Build and strengthen strategic partnerships to expand access, enhance clinical collaboration, and drive shared value

  • Represent the organization in executive-level discussions with CMOs, health system leaders, and key stakeholders

  • Identify opportunities in Health Systems for clinical alignment, innovation, and differentiated service offerings

  • Provide oversight of the medical pathologists. Provides leadership, direction and planning for a wide variety of pathology related activities throughout the organization

  • Partner with Regional Medical Directors, Regional Commercial and Business Development teams to support growth through clinically innovative strategies

Mergers, Acquisitions, Co-lab & Strategic Partnerships

  • Lead medical due diligence for acquisitions, partnerships, and investments, assessing clinical quality, capabilities, and risks

  • Evaluate target organizations’ medical leadership, clinical programs, and alignment with enterprise strategy

  • Provide clinical insights to inform deal structure, valuation considerations, and go/no-go decisions

  • Serve as the lead medical advisor throughout transaction lifecycle—from diligence through integration

Post-Deal Integration & Value Realization

  • Partner with integration teams to ensure successful clinical and operational alignment post-transaction

  • Define and implement clinical governance structures, quality standards, and best practices across acquired entities

  • Drive synergies and value creation through clinical standardization, innovation, and performance improvement

  • Monitor outcomes and ensure alignment with enterprise quality, safety, and regulatory expectations

Enterprise Clinical Leadership

  • Act as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on clinical strategy, external trends, and market dynamics

  • Ensure alignment between medical strategy and broader business objectives

  • Influence internal stakeholders and drive decision-making that balances clinical excellence with growth and efficiency

  • Promote a culture of clinical quality, innovation, and collaboration across the organization

  • Serve as an enterprise champion for medical team, ensuring its principles are integrated into the organization’s long-term clinical roadmap and service offerings

  • Help to lead the strategic integration of technology and AI to address complex medical challenges, driving operational efficiency and clinical innovation

  • Provide visionary leadership to our internal medical community, ensuring that medical leaders embedded within business units remain connected to the overarching enterprise clinical strategy




Qualifications:
  • Medical Degree: MD or DO from an accredited medical school is required

  • Board Certification: Active Board Certification in a recognized clinical specialty

  • Business/Leadership Education: An MBA, MHA, or equivalent advanced degree in business or healthcare administration is strongly preferred to support the strategic and financial aspects of the role

  • Licensure: Must possess (or be eligible for) an unrestricted medical license

  • Clinical Leadership: 10+ years of senior-level clinical leadership experience, preferably within a complex health system, academic medical center, or large-scale corporate medical environment

  • Strategic Transactions: Proven experience in medical due diligence, M&A, Co-Lab and/or large-scale clinical integrations

  • Change Management: Demonstrated success in leading organizational transformations, specifically transitions involving decentralized or matrixed reporting structures

  • External Engagement: Strong track record of interfacing with external healthcare entities, industry partners, and regulatory bodies to drive growth

  • Innovation & Tech Savvy: A forward-thinking approach to healthcare delivery, with a working knowledge of how AI and digital health tools can be leveraged in a clinical setting

  • Executive Presence: Advanced communication skills with the ability to influence C-suite executives and represent the medical organization in high-level external forums
