Software Engineer III
Work as part of a small, agile team to design and implement new features and technologies in a variety of different products throughout Quest Diagnostics. Deliver high-quality, high-performance code in an agile environment.
Please note this is a Hybrid opportunity. The position requires three days of work on site in our San Juan Capistrano, CA labroatory. The other two days will account for work from home.
- Develop key product features within existing large-scale enterprise applications and new strategic initiatives that will drive system and operational efficiencies, measure system performance, and provide glue for complex solutions.
- Participate in the full SDLC involving design, implementation, testing, & launching.
- Assist with the generation and analysis of business and functional requirements for proposed software solutions.
- Participate in architectural and database design discussions as they relate to product direction.
- Develop features completely including the front-end components and the backend systems.
- Design and implement changes to systems that yield higher performance and resiliency while achieving lower operations overhead.
- Own the delivery of an entire piece of a system or application, and serve as a technical lead on small to midsize complex projects.
- Work closely with other engineers to develop the best technical design and approach for new product development.
- Build software solutions where the problem is not well defined. Design and define the interaction between the other component pieces.
- Consistently define and apply technologies, standards and software engineering practices, mentoring other team members.
- Contribute to the focus and effectiveness of the development team; tracking issues to resolution, monitoring the effectiveness of tasks, and providing status to the team lead.
- Raise long-term architecture issues within project.
- Conduct design and code reviews of multiple projects.
- Generate data for project planning, including task breakdown & estimation of work for a project. Competent in developing accurate estimates & risk assessments. Track status within the project as necessary.
- Communicate team and project status to project manager and director.
- May occasionally act in the Team Lead role
- Act as the designated expert for owned application area(s).
- Contribute to the continued improvement of the organization’s development procedures by looking for opportunities for improvement and implementing solutions.
Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent.
Required Work Experience:
- 5+ years professional experience in Software development and healthcare/laboratory information Systems
- 5+ years of database/SQL development experience in a Microsoft SQL server and Oracle environments.
- Experience with SQL Server Services: Experience with SSRS, SSIS, or SSAS
- Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server: Expertise in Microsoft SQL Server 2014/2016/2019
- Experience with Version Control and CI/CD: Experience with TFS, Git, and setting up CI/CD pipelines
- Computer Science fundamentals in object-oriented (OO) design patterns, distributed databases, and data modeling techniques
Competencies:
- Passion for new and emerging AI and Data technologies, and the ability to keep up to date in technological innovations and new releases
- Proficiency in AI Concepts: Familiarity with AI/ML concepts, tools, and processes to facilitate content development and cross-team coordination.
- Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, SQL, R, Java, C, Unix Shell scripting
- Strong ability to structure content, develop marketing and training materials, and manage knowledge-sharing platforms (e.g., SharePoint).
- Collaborate effectively with engineering, and product teams to align program objectives with broader organizational goals
- Proactively assist with the identification of program risks, develop and execute mitigation plans, and communicate rationale and updates clearly.
- Willingness to participate in international projects
- Active listening skills and ability to articulate message according to audience
- Communicate effectively to both technical group and the management within the organization
- Problem-solving skills. Ability to identify alternatives, set priorities, and identify solutions
- Help establish AI metrics and work with multiple stakeholders on strategies for executing, measuring progress, and reporting results
- Identify opportunities to improve tooling and implement scalable solutions

Pay Range: $110,000 - $135,000 / year
Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors
including relevant skills, training, experience, education,
and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and
organizational factors are also considered. Successful
candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance
bonus compensation.
