Job Description
Under the direction of the Sr. Automation Manager, the Senior Automation Reliability Engineer (Robotics) applies technical expertise, research and development experience, and collaborative problem-solving skills to design, implement, and sustain advanced robotics and automation solutions. This role ensures system reliability, supports laboratory efficiency and scalability, and contributes to the continuous improvement of automated processes across the organization.
Responsibilities:
Program & optimize robotic platforms such as Hamilton, Tecan, and Agilent—writing and refining custom scripts, liquid classes, labware definitions, and scheduling methods.
Own the reliability lifecycle—proactively monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain instruments; partner with vendors and service engineers to minimize downtime and extend system longevity.
Design and validate automated workflows—developing protocols, performance qualifications, and maintenance documentation while training operators on best practices.
Innovate at scale—work across R&D, Operations, and technical teams to evaluate new technologies, validate instruments, and implement automation solutions that support clinical growth.
Lead knowledge sharing—train staff, document best practices, and occasionally travel to other labs to support cross-site automation initiatives.
Integrate robotics with informatics—collaborate with software, bioinformatics, and R&D teams to connect automated systems with LIMS, scheduling software, and other digital tools.
Stay ahead of the curve—attend trainings and conferences to bring in new ideas, methods, and technologies to keep our lab automation at the forefront.
Contribute to team culture—collaborate, problem-solve, and help refine processes that make the entire group more effective and future-ready.
Qualifications:
Required Work Experience:
• 3–6 years of experience in laboratory automation/robotics (Ph.D. +3, M.S. +4, or B.S. +6) in a biotech, or industrial setting.
• Hands-on experience programming, testing, and troubleshooting robotic systems (Hamilton, Tecan, Agilent, or similar).
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, regulated environment.
Preferred Work Experience:
• 4+ years building, programming, and supporting integrated automation solutions.
• Experience with scheduling/integration software (HighRes, Biosero, or custom platforms).
• Prior applications/service engineer experience with an instrument vendor.
• Experience in clinical labs and knowledge of CLIA requirements and IVD design control.
• Strong scripting/coding skills (Python, Java, C#).
Physical and Mental Requirements:
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms in the operation of equipment or instruments located in the work environment.
• The employee is frequently required to sit and stand; and is occasionally required to walk and stoop
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and depth perception.
• Job duties are performed in a laboratory environment utilizing standard lab equipment and PPE.
• Some operations include the use of chemicals which require following safe handling procedures.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
• Work performed in designated areas may require the use of appropriate safety precautions and protective equipment.
• Must be able to work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and procedures outlined in the Environmental Health & Safety Manual.
Work Environment:
Travel Up to 10% with occasional rotational weekends.
