Job Details
The Director, Specimen Processing is accountable for the planning, administration, and control of the Sample Preparation, Lab Support, and the Referral areas within the region. The incumbent ensures that all specimens and samples received are processed in accordance with policies and/or procedures established by clinical and technical departments and are provided to the various departments in a ready to test condition where applicable. The incumbent is expected to meet all established completion time and/or processing time schedules in a zero defects manner. The incumbent actively supports and complies with all company and departmental policies and procedures. Travel 50-75%.
- Ensures that the selection, training, and promotion of personnel is handled in a manner consistent with the error free nature of the work to be performed, good medical laboratory practice, and in accordance with all corporate policies and procedures.
- Establishes and maintains standards of performance and performance monitoring/reporting systems as necessary to ensure high levels of productivity and smooth operation of the department and provide regular production reporting information as needed. This area includes maintaining such records and documents as are necessary to comply with inspection, licensing and certification procedures.
- Develops, establishes, maintains, and periodically reviews all policies and procedures related to the preparation of sample or specimen material received for delivery to the appropriate laboratory within Quest Diagnostics, to include development of training programs, preparation procedures, equipment operation guidelines and procedures, etc.
- Defines and establishes an organizational structure consistent with the flow process required for processing the specimen and or sample material received ensuring clear lines of authority and accountability among subordinates.
- Ensures that all corporate policies and procedures are followed and supported within scope of the position.
- Develops, recommends, and controls the budget for the departments within the scope of this position, to include ensuring that such financial controls as are needed are in place and operating. Provides periodic reports to management on budgetary status and handles budgetary variances as appropriate.
- Establishes and monitors problem identification, isolation, and solution mechanisms as needed to ensure error free work on the part of the departments and prompt handling of unusual situations which may occur from time to time.
- Maintains an awareness of the current state-of-the-art in the medical laboratory area and applies such knowledge to the Quest Diagnostics process.
- Establishes an open management environment within the department ensuring that the individual employee is treated with respect, dignity, and consideration by all members of the Quest Diagnostics team.

Previous experience in a health care environment highly desirable.

- A high level of interpersonal skills is necessary to deal effectively with subordinates, peers, superiors, clients and the public, particularly during periods of stress
