At Quest Diagnostics Incorporated, we understand urgency. But more than speed, we focus our energies on accuracy. Currently, we seek a Director, Science – Toxicology for our Nichols Institute in Valencia, CA. 


Quest Diagnostics, the nation’s largest clinical laboratory, is seeking candidates for the Director, Science – Toxicology for our site in Valencia, CA.  Reporting directly to the Director of Laboratory Operations, the Scientific Director provides technical, regulatory and operational oversight to a component department or division of the laboratory.  In conjunction with the Manager and the Technical Supervisors of the component department(s), the Scientific Director develops a cohesive team to manage the activities of the department(s) and division.  The principle duties of the position are to provide operational, managerial and technical oversight of two supervisors, five managers and four scientists (75 indirect reports) responsible for Trace Elements, Pain Management (drugs of abuse) and Special Chemistry (therapeutic drug monitoring) testing programs and related departments.  This position requires knowledge of pain management, drug of abuse testing, therapeutic drug monitoring, and trace element testing, working closely with our internal teams as well as external clients.

Nichols Institute, Valencia, is a full-service Clinical Reference Laboratory and the nation's leading provider of diagnostic testing information and services that patients and physicians need to make better healthcare decisions. Nichols Institute – Valencia is a new custom designed 200,000 square foot facility which houses a wide variety of clinical laboratories, conducting a wide variety of assays. Among the specialty areas are Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Pain Management and Toxicology.  The site also hosts a Clinical Trials Department.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty competently.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy (MD, DO), or Doctoral degree (PhD), or equivalent years of relevant clinical laboratory industry or research experience.

  • DABCC (Clinical Chemistry and/or Toxicological Chemistry) or NRCC board certificate

  • A valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Clinical Chemistry Scientist (CCS) license, Bioanalyst or Laboratory Director License, or limited license in the area of responsibility, issued by the State of California. 

  • If appropriate, and meeting the eligibility requirements under New York law, a New York State Certificate of Qualification in the area(s) covered by the division A New York State Certificate of Qualification is preferred but is not an essential qualification for the position of Scientific Director.

  • Six or more years of clinical laboratory experience (or its equivalent), with at least four years in the field of testing performed by the department/division.

  • Demonstrated effective leadership and supervisory experience.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the trends and forces shaping the health care delivery system, the provision of care, and other emerging issues in healthcare management.

  • Demonstrated flexibility and initiative to effectively lead change efforts to respond to marketplace or organizational changes.

  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Highly developed ability to work effectively with a variety of constituencies, and ability to lead and manage through influence and delegation.

  • Demonstrated fiscal management capabilities including effective expense reduction, utilization, management, and budget control.

  • Proven personnel management strength including demonstrated ability to select, motivate, develop, evaluate performance, discipline, and promote collaborative team efforts.

  • Demonstrated capabilities in cross-functional process assessment, problem- solving and process improvement.

  • Demonstrated experience in organizing and assigning work, allocating resources, and scheduling appropriate staff mix.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current technical, quality control, and quality assurance procedures and laboratory information systems.

  • Experience in teaching, as well as involvement in professional activities
