Medical Director – Diagnostic Lab of Michigan
(Onsite in Southfield, Michigan)
The medical director is a senior physician leader responsible for providing medical, scientific, and clinical laboratory leadership across an integrated joint venture between Corewell Health and Quest Diagnostics. This role serves as a key physician liaison working collaboratively with joint venture leadership, health system executives, medical staff, pathologists, laboratory operations, and company leadership to optimize laboratory services.
Responsibilities:
The Medical Director oversees the quality of testing and services provided by the company. The Medical Director is accountable for advancing patient safety, diagnostics quality, regulatory compliance, clinical excellence, and high value care while helping to align laboratory services with the strategic, operational, and clinical priorities of the joint venture.
The Medical Director will serve as CLIA Laboratory Director and coordinates the activities of pathologists who have responsibilities related to their respective sub-specialty services.
- Serves as the CLIA director for the laboratory and ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements. Includes preparation and response to inspections.
- Provides oversight within the laboratory to ensure quality of care, patient safety, and the clinical effectiveness of lab services.
- Lead and support quality assurance, quality control and continuous improvement programs, including review of quality indicators, proficiency testing, quality events and corrective actions.
- Provides expert consultation to physicians and other clinical providers regarding test selection, utilization, interpretation and correlation of laboratory results.
- Develops and promotes standardized processes, policies and procedures.
- Develops and maintains superior diagnostics.
- Functions as an influencing leader for pathologists providing oversight, management, scheduling, and performance reviews.
- Reviews and advises on sub-specialty policies and procedures.
- Supports educational programs for medical students, residents, and fellows in accordance with ACGME requirements and GME policies.
- Participates in the selection of division manager and technical supervisor.
- Provides quarterly in-service to division manager and technical supervisor.
- Partners with laboratory and operational leaders to optimize workflow, technology, equipment, service delivery, efficiency, and cost effectiveness.
- Serves as the key liaison with the Corewell Health laboratory executive medical directors.
- Participates in strategic planning and responsible stewardship of laboratory resources.
- Partners with joint venture and company leadership to identify opportunities to improve clinical value, patient experience and laboratory performance.
- Maintains knowledge of emerging developments in laboratory medicine, diagnostics, technology and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications:
- MD or DO from an accredited institution.
- Board certification in Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP), or appropriate board certification based on laboratory scope.
- Meets applicable CLIA requirements to serve as Laboratory Director.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant clinical and/or laboratory leadership experience.
- Strong knowledge of CLIA, CAP and applicable federal and state laboratory regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with physicians, senior executives, laboratory professionals and operational leaders.
- Strong leadership, communication, relationship-management and problem-solving skills.
