Pay Range: $190,000 - $220,000 salary + 20% target AIP 

Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Successful candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance bonus compensation.

The Director of Responsible AI will lead Quest’s enterprise-wide Responsible AI program, ensuring that all artificial intelligence and generative AI solutions are designed, deployed and governed in alignment with the company’s ethical standards, regulatory obligations and patient centric mission.  This role will chair the AI Review Board (AIRB) and be responsible for creating and maintaining an Impact Assessment methodology to guide the AIRB in its case-by-case review of proposed AI use cases. The Lead will also support the AI Working Group (AIWG), promote ethical awareness among stakeholders, and monitor for unforeseen consequences that may arise from the use of data and AI.

This individual will define what “Responsible AI” means for Quest, establish policies and processes that operationalize those principles and ensure AI delivers innovation with transparency, fairness and accountability.  Through this work, the Director will foster a culture of trusted innovation by empowering the people of Quest to lead the healthcare industry in the responsible and ethical use of AI.

The position is based at Quest's Secaucus, NJ headquarters and requires a minimum of 3 days/week on-site (hybrid).




Responsibilities:
  • Build and lead the Responsible AI function by establishing the structure and operating model needed to embed ethical AI practices across the enterprise.
  • Chair the AI Review Board (AIRB), the organization's Responsible AI board, providing leadership and direction in evaluating all proposed AI and GenAI use cases.
  • Develop and enforce enterprise-wide Responsible AI policies, guidelines, and procedures to ensure AI development and deployment adheres to ethical principles.
  • Define and monitor "Responsible AI" for Quest Diagnostics, maintaining a pulse on the market, competition, and AI innovation.
  • Develop and maintain an Impact Assessment methodology to guide the AIRB in decision-making.
  • Assess potential risks associated with AI projects, including security risks like prompt injection and LLM jailbreaks, ensuring compliance with ethical guidelines and frameworks such as the NIST AI RMF.
  • Collaborate with data teams, legal, privacy, and other SMEs to define project outcomes, ethical considerations, and execute ethical diagnostics and assessments.
  • Partner with Legal, Compliance, Security and HR to ensure consistent integration of Responsible AI expectations into enterprise governance and training programs.
  • Investigate RAI violations, ensure prompt action and recommend corrective solutions.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to strengthen controls, transparency and risk mitigation processes.
  • Educate the organization about ethical data and AI practices, promoting a culture of responsibility and ethical consciousness.
  • Represent Quest Diagnostics as a Subject Matter Expert on Responsible AI at external events and with industry associations.
  • Serve as an internal consultant to all levels within Quest Diagnostics to guide the development of best practices for Responsible AI.
  • Define and track enterprise level metrics that measure adherence to Responsible AI standards and maturity across business units.
  • Research and publish concise summaries and briefings of the legal and regulatory landscape for AI where Quest operates.
  • Lead Quest wide efforts to increase AI literacy and understanding of ethical AI principles.
  • Inspire and drive alignment across business and technology to make responsible innovation a core organization capability.
  • Manage a team of 4 direct reports
  • Travel up to 15%



Qualifications:

Required:  

  • 10+ years in technology, data governance, digital ethics, risk management or regulatory compliance within a complex or regulated industry.
  • Demonstrated leadership in developing or managing policy, governance, or oversight structures related to emerging technologies, analytics or data driven decision systems.
  • Experience in creating written policy documents and white papers for internal and external audiences.
  • Expertise in applying the NIST AI framework and familiarity with other relevant ethics frameworks.
  • Familiarity with GenAI performance metrics and setting GenAI performance standards per use case.
  • Strong understanding of AI and GenAI concepts, model governance, bias and fairness, and explainability.
  • Familiarity with major data and AI regulatory frameworks e.g. HIPAA, GDPR, NIST, AI RMF, and EU AI Act and how they apply in healthcare.
  • Demonstrated success in building and scaling new teams or functions with ability to attract top talent, foster a culture of trust, accountability and ethical innovation.

Preferred:

  • Background in healthcare, diagnostic, or life sciences with exposure to data privacy, regulatory compliance or clinical technologies
  • Experience establishing or contributing to AI review boards, model risk committees or digital ethic programs
  • Published articles, presentations or industry participation to Responsible AI, data ethics or AI policy
  • Understanding of key tools and methods used in bias detection, model interpretability, privacy-preserving technologies and ethical impact assessments

Required:

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Business, Data Science, Engineering, Ethics, Law or a related field.

Preferred:

  • Graduate degree: MS, PhD, JD, MBA
