Job Description


The Director of Data Fabric Platform will play a pivotal role in leading the strategy and execution of our enterprise data fabric and data product marketplace. This role is responsible for driving the strategic vision, technical architecture, and operational excellence of the data platform to ensure its scalability, reliability, and security. A key focus will be on fostering a "data as a product" mindset, ensuring that data is not just technically available but is also discoverable, understandable, and easily consumable for the business. This executive will be a key member of the technology leadership team, responsible for building and mentoring a high-performing engineering organization and governing relationships with both internal teams and external implementation partners. They will drive the data strategy to enable business innovation, reduce "time to insight," and improve operational efficiency through a best-in-class data platform. This role requires a strong blend of technical expertise, executive leadership skills, and business acumen.

This is a hybrid role and the selected candidate must be near-site to one of Quest Diagnostics hub locations. Preferred locations are Secaucus, NJ or Schaumburg, IL. Pay Range: $180,000-$220,000/year + 20% Annual Incentive Plan. 

Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered.

Responsibilities:

Strategy and Vision:

  • Develop and communicate a clear strategic vision for the data fabric platform and data product marketplace, focusing on creating an intuitive, self-service "shopping" experience for data consumers.

  • Identify emerging trends, technologies, and best practices, particularly within the GCP ecosystem, and incorporate them into the platform roadmap to drive continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate with key business and clinical stakeholders to define, prioritize, and develop a roadmap for data products and platform capabilities.

  • Develop and manage the annual budget, financial forecasts, and strategic relationships with key technology vendors and external implementation/support partners to drive innovation and ensure cost-effective solutions.

Technical Leadership:

  • Define and champion the overall technical architecture for the data fabric, establishing Google Cloud Platform (GCP) as the primary platform while ensuring seamless and secure integration with multi-cloud (AWS, Azure) and on-premises data sources.

  • Empower and mentor lead engineers and managers to drive architectural decisions, ensuring the platform is scalable, performant, and built on modern data management principles.

  • Foster a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and collaboration within the team.

Platform Development and Operations:

  • Establish and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) for the data platform, including system reliability, cost-efficiency, and the reduction of "time to insight" for business stakeholders.

  • Ensure the development lifecycle aligns with business priorities and delivers measurable value through certified data products.

  • Ensure data product contracts are established and mature to measure ownership, value, and utilization.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as data engineering, data science, and IT operations, to ensure seamless integration and utilization of the platform.

Data Governance and Security:

  • Lead the strategy for data governance and security in partnership with corporate security, legal, and compliance teams, with a special focus on the compliant handling of clinical and healthcare data (e.g., PHI).

  • Champion a culture of data stewardship and ensure robust policies are implemented to protect sensitive data.

Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration:

  • Collaborate closely with business leaders, data analysts, and other stakeholders to understand their data needs and provide insights and solutions through the data fabric platform.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal partners, external implementation and support teams, vendors, and industry experts to leverage their expertise.




Qualifications:

Required Work Experience: 

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, data architecture, or a related field, with at least 5 years in a leadership or management role.

  • Proven experience leading the development of large-scale data platforms and distributed systems.

  • Demonstrated experience managing vendor relationships and overseeing external or outsourced engineering and support teams.

Knowledge:

  • Expert-level knowledge of Google Cloud Platform (GCP) data services (e.g., BigQuery, Dataplex, Dataflow, Pub/Sub).

  • Practical experience and architectural understanding of other major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) to facilitate multi-cloud integration.

  • Deep understanding of data strategy, financial management (budgeting and forecasting), data governance, and data security.

  • Technical fluency and significant architectural experience in infrastructure automation, Python, Java or other languages to effectively lead architecture reviews and guide technical teams.

  • Data warehouses, SQL and NoSQL databases.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing high-performing engineering teams, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

  • Exceptional strategic thinking, executive communication, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Excellent problem-solving, critical-thinking, and communication abilities.
