Job Description


The Infrastructure Senior Director for Epic is responsible for the strategic oversight and operational management of our Epic EMR environment. This critical role will ensure the stability, performance, and scalability of our Epic systems by managing the vendor relationship, monitoring service level agreements (SLAs), and coordinating all Epic-related infrastructure activities with our external partners.

The Senior Director will utilize a strong understanding of Epic's technical architecture, strong vendor management skills, and a proven ability to lead complex IT initiatives in a healthcare setting, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance of our diagnostic workflows. The Senior Director reports to the Executive Director of Infrastructure Operations, participates in project scope discussions, and provides status updates to the leadership team.

This position must be located (hybrid) in either Schaumburg, IL or Secaucus, NJ.

Pay Range: $200,000 -$225,000/year + 25% Annual Incentive Plan + Long-Term Incentive
Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Successful candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance bonus compensation.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate closely with internal Epic application teams and clinical stakeholders to understand their infrastructure needs and ensure the Epic hosting environment meets these requirements.
  • Ensure that technical requirements and tasks are understood, clearly communicated, and executed on time
  • Oversee the coordination of Epic system upgrades, patching, and maintenance activities with the hosting provider, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Work with internal IT teams (e.g. networking, security) to ensure seamless integration between the Epic environment and internal systems (e.g. lab instruments, interfaces, other applications).
  • Coordinate production and non-production hardware and software support for Quest’s Epic infrastructure including servers, network, storage, backup, operating systems, virtualization platforms, and desktop devices.
  • Ensure proper configuration and connectivity for all Epic-related interfaces.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for the Epic environment.
  • Review performance metrics and capacity planning reports, advocating for necessary adjustments or upgrades.
  • Work with internal teams and vendors to troubleshoot complex performance issues and optimize system responsiveness.
  • Ensure vendors adhere to all relevant security policies, compliance regulations, and best practices.
  • Review and approve security audits, penetration tests, and compliance reports.
  • Participate in incident response planning and execution related to the hosted Epic environment.
  • Contribute to the development of IT infrastructure strategy and roadmap, specifically regarding the Epic hosting model.
  • Provide input on budget planning for Epic hosting, including forecasting future needs and costs.
  • Evaluate potential changes or enhancements to the hosting agreement to meet evolving business requirements.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer and training for internal IT staff on how to effectively interact with and support the Epic environment.
  • Ensure that technical staffing levels are maintained, and training and certification requirements are met.
  • Track technical integration issues and coordinating issue resolution.
  • Ensure that the systems teams provide routine system monitoring and that issues are mitigated.
  • Hire, train and manage a team of Epic Infrastructure Engineers to include onshore, offshore, insourced and outsourced resources.



Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with the Epic platform and its associated infrastructure.
  • Experience managing IT infrastructure in the healthcare industry, or other highly regulated environments.
  • Previous oversight of large-scale datacenter or public cloud infrastructure including; 
  1. Deployments, manual or automated 
  2. Deployment and maintenance of network infrastructure
  3. Large footprint compute platforms, including scaling and right-sizing
  4. Security Operations including patching, vulnerability management and threat response
  5. Audit and compliance activities such as assessments and reporting
  6. Financial Operations including budgeting and forecasting
  • Experience with project management and people leadership.
  • Experience with end user devices (PCs, VDI) as well as familiarity with lab instruments is also beneficial.
  • Certifications related to Epic, cloud infrastructure, operating systems, project management are preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of Epic and its underlying infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with supporting technologies: 
  1. General IT infrastructure concepts
  2. Windows and Linux operating systems
  3. Deployment, Patching, Monitoring, Troubleshooting
  4. Capacity planning
  • Resource management and optimization.
  • Azure and AWS cloud platforms:
  1. Core SaaS, PaaS and IaaS services (Compute, Storage, Database, Network etc.)
  2. Deployment Automation and management (Terraform, ARM, CloudFormation etc.)
  3. FinOps tools and methods (Cost Management, Chargeback, Reservations, Savings Plans etc.)
  • Large scale database platforms, both PaaS and IaaS.
  • Storage management; resiliency, backup and cost management.
  • Networking; WAN, LAN connectivity, ingress and egress management, ACLs, LTM and GTM etc.
  • Monitoring, backup and disaster recovery, including knowledge of tools like Splunk and Dynatrace.
  • Security tools such as Defender, Wiz, CloudWatch, Qualys etc.
  • VDI and end user compute concepts and tools, e.g. Citrix, Windows 365 etc.
  • The ability to travel up to 25%.
