Medical Director – Sacramento, CA

Pay Range: $300,000 - $350,000 / year

Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Successful candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance bonus compensation.

Quest Diagnostics is seeking a Medical Director for our Northern California geography. This individual will serve as the CLIA license holder for our regional Clinical Pathology laboratory located in Sacramento, CA, which currently employs >200 staff and services over 20k patients per day. The individual will work within a multifunctional team to ensure that the medical quality of the laboratory’s services meets the healthcare needs of our patient population, and they will represent Quest externally to our providers in the region’s medical community.

The position provides excellent opportunities to work with the latest technologies in laboratory medicine, make significant contributions to healthcare on both a local and national level, and to engage with a large medical community that provides numerous opportunities for educational and professional growth.


  • Serve as the CLIA license holder for the Sacramento lab, including any satellite laboratories in the area.
  • Work closely with the Operations and Quality Assurance teams to oversee the quality of the laboratory’s testing.
  • Represent the laboratory with our customers and the medical community in Northern California.
  • Act as a consultant to our providers and patients for test interpretation and other patient care related matters.
  • Interact with accrediting/regulatory agencies, administrative officials, and the medical device industry to ensure the continuity of our business.
  • Work within Quest’s larger medical organization to effect change on a national level.
  • 5-10% travel to local clients and other Quest sites is expected.

  • M.D. or D.O.
  • Board Certification in either Clinical Pathology, or both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology
  • Unrestricted California State Medical License (or ability to obtain).
  • Superior knowledge of all aspects of Clinical Pathology.
  • Experience handling regulatory issues, including work with CAP, CLIA, the state and local Public Health Departments.
  • Experience supervising high complexity testing in an inpatient and/or outpatient laboratory setting.
  • The capacity to learn and grow, to communicate effectively, and to work well within a large multifunctional team are critical.
