Position Description

The Senior Director, Bioinformatics is responsible for leading and developing our bioinformatics technology organization in the U.S., including four teams located across the country.  This role will continue to develop and improve our efforts in technology and software through creation of bioinformatics solutions that will help Quest to become the global leader in clinical bioinformatics technology. This role is responsible for providing overarching strategic direction, coaching and leadership of the bioinformatics teams and technology roadmaps. This role requires an experienced technological transformational leader, with a strong track record in leading technology and software teams and utilizing agile methodologies.

This is a critical leadership position reporting directly to the Executive Director, Advanced Diagnostics Technologies, working closely with the global Bioinformatics organization, and has additional ties to the Advanced Diagnostics, General Diagnostics, R&D, Franchise teams and Quest IT.

Duties and Responsibilities

•         Lead U.S. based bioinformatics organization, with line-management responsibility of the bioinformatics team managers

•         Partner closely with the Bioinformatics and technology teams in Finland to formulate and support the overall ADx Bioinformatics and technology strategy. 

•         Develop and improve our efforts in technology and software through creation of bioinformatics solutions that will help Quest to become the global leader in clinical bioinformatics technology

•         Provide leadership and guidance to the organization to ensure appropriate accountability for key performance objectives, with a particular focus on developing processes to maximize profitable revenue growth 

•         Drive results through day-to-day oversight of the bioinformatics operational processes, collaborating closely with colleagues across all key business functions.

•         Lead and manage cross-functional R&D projects and budgets

•         Evaluate the talent level of employees and drive actions to develop employee talent and address performance issues.

•         Proven success in change leadership and creating engaged and inspired teams.

•         Partner with Senior Leadership and drive growth in support of the business strategy supported by bioinformatics solutions that drive business value and provide a competitive advantage.

•         Leverage industry best practices to drive continuous improvement within bioinformatics and software development process and practices

•         Support culture of continuous improvement with a will to win. Employ agile methodology principles to drive continuous improvement activities and lead initiatives as required.

Qualifications

•         BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics, or equivalent work experience required, advanced degree preferred

•         Minimum 8+ years relevant industry experience

•         A solid background in software development, vendor relationships, technologies, standards, etc.

•         Strong understanding of software best practices and agile methodology to serve as role model for their teams and maintain a high level of quality and scalability on the technical as well as scientific side

•         Proven extensive technology and R&D planning and management experience is a must.

•         Adjusting to change with demonstrated experience acting as a change agent for a large organization

•         Influences and communicates effectively with non-technical audiences including senior business executives and managers.

•         Demonstrated leadership skills, project management skills, strong written and verbal skills, and organizational skills.  Proven ability to drive process with indirect authority to project team members.

•         A sharp thinker who quickly grasps the technical implications of business processes, and able to provide valuable insight into the perspectives of users, managers, developers, and other stakeholders

•         Comfortably moves between highly varying levels of abstraction from business strategy to IT strategy to high-level technical design

•         Quickly and reasonably estimates capital, schedule, and human resources costs of proposed solutions. Compares, contrasts, and prioritizes among alternatives approaches while assessing risk both quantitatively and qualitatively

•         Team player mindset and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team

•         Goal orientation, self-motivation, and drive to make a positive impact in healthcare

Preferred Qualifications

•         Experience with bioinformatics, genomics, or healthcare

•         Experience with sensitive patient data and working under HIPAA regulations

•         Experience working with multi-cultural, international teams

•         MSc/PhD degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics
