Position Description

Purpose of the Role – Optimize Regional Pathology Service and Medical Quality; Provide medical leadership for physicians in the regional physician clusters, operational oversight for day-to-day AP Medical Services, and coordination with regional, commercial and operations leaders.

Responsibility Areas

Commercial Execution

•       Coordinate with Oncology sales to ensure pathology support for sales efforts and focus on sales opportunities, including: expansion of esoteric and molecular testing and routing of specimens to the integrated Quest and AmeriPath practices

•       Manage in hospital pathology relationships including input into contracting.

•       Assist commercial contracting in negotiating with regional health plans and ACO organizations to optimize contract profitability.


•          Manage day to day pathology operations, including capacity and work load balancing.

      •          Ensure fulfillment of service levels (incl flow, molecular, and  TC/PC).

•          Coordinate with Regional Ops lead to ensure TC Ops is appropriately resourced.

•          Provide QA and compliance for regional physician clusters.

•          Oversee licensure for regional physician clusters.

Medical-execution and buy-in

•          Provide medical leadership for physician clusters in the region.

•          Provide medical leadership and coordination of activities with AmeriPath and Quest practice                                             


•          Support professional development for regional pathologists.

Accountabilities / Metrics

•       Regional pathology P&L – OM

•       Esoteric and Molecular Pathology revenue growth and market share gain

•       Meet required service and profitability levels for pathology

•       Workload/productivity/capacity for physician clusters

•       Retention and development of regional pathologists

•       Ensure regulatory compliance and licensure CAP/CLIA

•       Customer travel and regional interface – 25% of time

Reports to: Vice President- Pathology and Medical Services

Education Requirements: M.D., AP board certification, subspecialty certification or fellowship trained desirable

Critical Know How and Skill – Selection Criteria

•       Knowledgeable of subspecialties

•       Market driven including esoteric/MDx

•       7-10 years experience in managing pathologist group or other pathologists
