Job Summary

The Medical Writer, Global Scientific Publications and Education (Special Projects), is responsible for developing high quality materials that address needs of the chief medical officer (CMO) team. These materials will address laboratory testing technology, test selection, and test result interpretation. May write or edit scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Reports to Director, Global Scientific Publications and Education. 

Job Accountabilities:

1.      Researches and selects the relevant scientific and medical information to be included in Clinical Significance statements and other projects as assigned.

2.      Identifies tests that require new or revised Clinical Significance statements in collaboration with project manager and cross-functional colleagues.

3.      Writes, or works with subject matter experts (SMEs) to write, Clinical Significance statements and other projects as assigned.  

4.      Writes and edits educational materials (test highlights, summaries and guides, patient brochures, monographs, abstracts, journal articles, presentations, etc) ranging from 1 to 300 pages in length.

5.      Obtains appropriate approvals by working with SMEs and corporate review processes.

6.      Assists in assuring that approved materials are properly formatted and made available for viewing as appropriate.

7.      Adheres to all timelines and communicates to project manager when delays are likely.

8.      Achieves and maintains understanding of relevant writing and style guidelines, including AMA Manual of Style.

9.      Proactively maintains and builds knowledge of principles of laboratory medicine and evidence-based medicine.

10.  Performs other functions as requested by The Director of the Scientific Publications and Education or the Chief Laboratory Officer. 

Job Requirements: 

1.      Master’s degree or PhD in a medical or scientific discipline (especially biological sciences or quantitative fields such as health economics, biostatistics, and epidemiology) with 1 or more years of medical or health economics writing experience; Bachelor’s degree with 3 to 5 years of medical writing experience may be acceptable

2.      Proficiency in medical and scientific information retrieval

3.      Ability to quickly grasp the objective of a study, understand the targeted messaging, and evaluate the quality of evidence

4.      Strong communication skills (written and oral)

5.      Minor in English communications, composition, or journalism is a strong plus.

6.      Familiarity with US grammar and usage rules and AMA style

7.      Intermediate (or higher) level computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) and EndNote
