Position Description

Quality laboratory service is not just about providing accurate, useful, and timely information to the requesting physicians; it must often be provided within the context of the particular patient’s circumstances.  Medical Advisors have the contextual background to assist the ordering or referring clinician fully and optimally.

Quest Diagnostics Medical Advisors assist laboratory clients in answering inquiries regarding test results, including (but not limited to) result interpretation, test selection, evidence-based best practices, and technical considerations. Servicing consultation requests of all types is considered imperative and requires the availability and immediacy of Medical Advisor availability. Accessibility may be via telephone, email and/or other communication means.


•         The Medical Advisor provides consultation regarding the appropriateness of the testing ordered and interpretation of test results. Medical Advisors are expected to communicate directly with laboratory clients and must demonstrate proactive engagement with clients and ability to build customer relations.

•         Medical Advisors may serve as liaisons, facilitating communication between clients and additional Quest Diagnostics personnel, including but not limited to Medical Laboratory Directors, Scientific Directors, Technical Specialists, Subject Matter Experts, and laboratory staff.

•         Additional responsibilities include documenting and analyzing inquiry data, as well as developing content to streamline communications, optimize report content, and improve turnaround time.

•         Regularly consult with peers and maintain knowledge base of offered test menu and clinical relevance.

•         Regularly interact with potential and existing clients by phone to improve customer experience as part of the sales, account retention and business development processes and to convey the Values and Vision of Quest Diagnostics.

•         Medical Advisors must abide by their state licensure(s) and refrain the practice of clinical medicine

•         Medical Advisors must comply with all pertinent Quest Diagnostics policies, including but not limited to:

o   Compliance policies and procedures

o   Medical Advisors must adhere to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in all communications.

o   Pertinent Standard Operating Procedures, as issued by Corporate Medical Quality, Best Practice Teams and Applicable Business Units

o   Standards which exceed the minimum requirements of Federal, State, and local laws and regulations

•         Cooperate with other Quest Diagnostics initiatives and programs that may arise from time to time such as the following:

o   Maintain timely contact with pathologists and other physicians and scientists, to be responsive to their needs, and to respond in a timely manner to their requests for consultation concerning test methodology and clinical correlation of Quest Diagnostics testing services.

o   Collaborate with Quest Diagnostics medical staff in the development of tools and resources to enable clinical education and informed clinical decision making.

•         Assist Quest Diagnostics in professional liaison with professional societies concerned with clinical laboratory medicine.  This includes professional medical associations, governmental agencies, and other regulatory bodies concerned with the nature and scope of clinical laboratory business.


Work Experience:

•         At least 7 years of prior experience in an inpatient and/or outpatient clinical laboratory setting.

Technical Training or Professional Licensing:

•         Active unrestricted medical licensure

•         Successful completion of the Quest Diagnostics Medical Staff Credentialing process (job offers will be made contingent on acceptable review):

o   Verification of Education/Degree

o   Verification of State (or applicable) Medical License

o   Check of the (United States) National Practitioners' Database and review of claims against the physician (at the discretion of Credentialing Committee).

Board Certification in Pathology (AP/CP or CP) or other specialty that is pertinent to the job position
