Position Description

The Science Director of Drug Monitoring will be responsible for aligning core technologies, procedures and quality management in Atlanta with corporate toxicology initiatives in Quest Diagnostics, in order to maximize highly efficient and reliable patient care and ensure continuous business growth in the Drug Monitoring laboratory. In carrying out these responsibilities, the Science Director will act under the leadership of the Regional Medical Director and in collaboration with local and regional leadership in Operations, Customer Solutions, Commercial and other key functions.  Principle duties of the position include technical directorship (CLIA) and scientific oversight of research and development in the Drug Monitoring laboratory in Atlanta, as well as clinical consultation for Drug Monitoring clients throughout the Southeast Region of Quest Diagnostics.

1.    Serves as CLIA Technical Supervisor of the Quest Diagnostics Laboratory and Technical Supervisor/Science Director of the Drug Monitoring laboratory in Atlanta (Tucker) GA.

2.    Collaborates with medical directors and laboratory operations directors in the Southeast region to provide planning and oversight consistent with a CLIA Technical Supervisor across the regional laboratories.  Operations personnel do not report directly to the Science Director; however, the Science Director has broad authority in the role of Technical Supervisor, with duties that include:

a.    Technical oversight of clinical testing among regional laboratories, in alignment with corporate/Best Practice Team initiatives. Activities include but are not limited to:

                              i.    Standardization of technology platforms and Standard Operating Procedures

                             ii.    Oversight of adoption and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures

                            iii.    Direct participation in selecting and continuously optimizing appropriate test methods and platforms to meet strategic initiatives

                           iv.    Oversight of reagent and instrument evaluations in regional laboratories

                             v.    Oversight and assurance of strict adherence to quality control and proficiency testing programs

                           vi.    Review and approval of validations for new methods

b.    Technical oversight of research and development activities among regional laboratories. Activities include but are not limited to:

                              i.    Evaluation of emerging technologies that are implemented in the region, with focus on Drug Monitoring

                             ii.    Design and direction of experimental testing procedures; suggestions to changes in methods to increase validity and accuracy

3.    Provides oversight and is a contact person for teams including R&D scientists, technical scientists, laboratory managers and directors, project managers, financial analysts, and executives involved in strategic initiatives.

4.    Oversee product and process development, process validation and launch of production operation for products and services.

5.    Serves as a clinical toxicology consultant for the region, responding to clinical and technical inquiries from physicians and clients.  Focus will be placed on providing scientific and technical expertise for testing that requires high customer expectations of specialized technology, including pain management and toxicology.

6.    Develops and maintains contacts with educational institutions, professional organizations, government agencies, etc. to keep abreast of changes and developments in toxicology, pain management and other topics as indicated.

7.    Performs other duties as assigned.

Technical Leadership - Guides operations with directors and managers, with responsibility for direction of assigned areas.

Education and Experience - Ph.D. or equivalent level of experience.

Licenses/ Certifications/ Registrations - None. Toxicology certification such as ASCP or NRCC is valued.


•                      Ph.D. in the biological or chemical sciences:  clinical chemistry, toxicology (AACP certified) or microbiology (ASM certified).

•                      10+ years of work experience.

•                      NIDA/SAMSHA certified.

•                      Solid experience in an independent clinical and/or hospital lab environment.

•                      Strong working knowledge of toxicology and Clinical Chemistry.

o   Knowledge of other clinical laboratory disciplines, such as Hematology, Urinalysis, Immunology, Microbiology, Blood Bank and/or Histology/Pathology a plus.

•                      Excellent customer service skills required.  Able to speak credibly, concisely and accurately to both physicians and clients.  Excellent follow-up skills.

•                      Able to extract and apply theoretical and academic knowledge in an operational and transactional setting.

•                      Strong presentation skills.

•                      Ability to operate both strategically and tactically. 

•                      Strong leadership skills.

•                      Working knowledge of business operations, costs and efficiencies.

•                      Strong working knowledge of statistics.

•                      Strategic understanding of staffing needs.

•                      Strong working knowledge of federal, state and CAP regulations.
