At Quest Diagnostics, we understand urgency. But more than speed, we focus our energies on accuracy. Currently, we seek a Director, Science – Toxicology for Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute location in Chantilly, VA.

Quest Diagnostics - Chantilly is one of the largest 24/7 full service Clinical Reference Laboratory serving the all 50 states and many foreign countries. The lab has a full test menu including such key department as:  Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Pathology, Anatomic Pathology, Microbiology, Virology, Molecular Oncology, Hematology, Molecular Genetics, Coagulation, Molecular Infectious, Donor Lab, Histology, Flow Cytometry, Cytology, Cytogenetics, LC-MS/MS-Immunoassay, Immunology, Serology and related areas of testing.  We also have a full service Toxicology department that offers a large number of sections performing state of the art analytical testing. Due to the growth of our Toxicology department in all areas we are expanding our management team to allow us to service both the internal and external customers to match the Quest Diagnostics quality standards.


Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute, the nation’s largest clinical laboratory, is seeking candidates for the Director, Science – Toxicology for our site in Chantilly, VA.  Reporting directly to the Director of Laboratory Operations, the Scientific Director provides technical, regulatory and operational oversight to a component department or division of the laboratory.  In conjunction with the Manager and the Technical Supervisors of the component department(s), the Scientific Director develops a cohesive team to manage the activities of the department(s) and division.  The principle duties of the position are to provide operational, managerial and technical oversight for all areas of Toxicology:   Clinical Toxicology, Emergency Toxicology, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Trace Metals, Pain Management and a variety Drugs of Abuse testing disciplines. This position requires knowledge of many different areas of Toxicology both theoretical and analytical.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty competently.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • Doctoral degree (PhD), or equivalent years of relevant clinical laboratory industry or research experience.  Subspecialty training and/or Board Certification in Clinical Chemistry/Toxicology (ABCCC) or Forensic Toxicology (D-ABFT) highly desired.


  • Six or more years of clinical laboratory experience (or its equivalent), with at least four years in the field of testing performed by the department/division.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the trends and forces shaping the health care delivery system, the provision of care, and other emerging issues in healthcare management.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and initiative to effectively lead change efforts to respond to marketplace or organizational changes.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Highly developed ability to work effectively with a variety of constituencies, and ability to lead and manage through influence and delegation.
  • Demonstrated fiscal management capabilities including effective expense reduction, utilization, management, and budget control.
  • Proven personnel management strength including demonstrated ability to select, motivate, develop, evaluate performance, discipline, and promote collaborative team efforts.
  • Demonstrated capabilities in cross-functional process assessment, problem- solving and process improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience in organizing and assigning work, allocating resources, and scheduling appropriate staff mix.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current technical, quality control, and quality assurance procedures and laboratory information systems.
  • Experience in teaching, as well as involvement in professional activities
