The Genomic Variant Scientist can work remotely.

Genomic Variant Scientist, the role:

The Genomic Variant Scientist investigates the clinical significance of gene variants found during genetic testing; searches internal datasets as well as published literature, online mutation databases, or other academic resources; prepares variant assessment summaries and maintains internal variant database for different disease/assay areas. Successful performance of job duties contributes to the achieved expected TAT of testing and quality result analysis with enhanced reporting.

In addition, the Genomic Variant Scientist:

• Assists genetic directors and counselors in preparing reports and perform additional tasks when necessary.
• Investigates the pathogenicity of DNA sequence variants found real-time in patients.
• Customizes clinical report text in collaboration with genetic directors and counselors. 
• Curates variant database with all pertinent findings.
• Interfaces with others internally: Various facets of Laboratory Operations, Medical group, R&D group.   
• Interfaces with others externally: Mutation database curators, journal article authors, clinical and research experts in the field.
  

To qualify, the ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

• Molecular biology knowledge and research skills normally acquired through the successful completion of an advanced degree (M.S./Ph.D.) in Genetics, Molecular Biology or related scientific discipline.
• 6+ years of extensive industrial experience and significant demonstration of capabilities for a candidate with a Bachelor's degree, at least 4 years of relevant industrial experience with a Master's degree, or a Ph.D. with thesis. 
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as peer-reviewed scientific journal articles.
• Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, analysis of variance and correlation techniques.
• Exhibits scientific creativity and routinely demonstrates independent thought. 
• Possesses goal-oriented focus with comfort in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to curate pertinent data findings in a clear and detail-oriented manner.
• Though laboratory techniques are not physically performed, knowledge in the use of common laboratory equipment and techniques is required.
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities.
• Strong analytical skills and proficiency in using Office software such as Access, Excel and Word. 
• Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in a variety of situations.
