Core Purpose:

This position is responsible for providing overarching strategic direction, coaching and global leadership on the implementation of Quest Diagnostic’s Quest Management System (QMS) Lean Enterprise program and continuous improvement (CI) efforts throughout all of the Company’s operational functions.  These functions include As such, this position requires an experienced Lean transformation leader with a broad cross-functional background and experience in either laboratory or manufacturing operations, as well as demonstrated success in driving improvements across transnational business processes. The successful candidate will have a results-oriented leadership style with strong influencing skills and the ability to make an immediate and lasting organizational impact.  Such individual must be both a credible teacher to diverse levels of people (from laboratory floor to Senior Executive leadership) and capable of developing and executing lean strategies that yield measurable business results.  This is a critical leadership position reporting directly to the Corporate Vice President of Laboratory Operations and Operations Excellence, and has additional ties to the commercial business leads as well as the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Administrative Officer to ensure successful implementation throughout the Company.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a business-wide QMS Continuous Improvement (CI) strategy.  Oversee, manage and facilitate the Company’s Lean initiative and continuous improvement strategy across all divisions and functions. Take a strategic view of the organization, and facilitate the creation of an Enterprise-wide Lean (kaizen) culture and use Lean methodologies to drive core/strategic processes to respond to the needs of customers with minimal waste.
  • Support executive leadership and management as the Company’s Lean Sensei in the development, planning and execution of a lean enterprise transformation strategy and metrics. Collaborate with the Senior Management Team (SMT) and Operations Leadership Team (OLT) to provide strategic direction for Quest and translate it into actionable goals
  • Coach leadership (at all levels) through the lean and six sigma implementation strategy for the business focused on delivering business results and building competency in lean methods. Provide leadership/mentoring/training to all levels of the organization on the use and practice of Lean methodology and tools (e.g. 5S, TPM, visual controls, standardized work, VSM, Jidoka, Kaizen, SMED, etc…); facilitate large-scale, cross-functional kaizen events.
  • Focus on business performance that constantly strives to eliminate waste, improve customer satisfaction, and increase market share via the use of Lean tools and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Facilitate and drive change in a fast paced and ever changing environment leveraging his/her strong interpersonal skills. Act as a key driver of change within the business, supporting management/cross functional decisions by communicating the enterprise-wide changes to employees (and other stake holders such as suppliers) and helping them to learn, understand, adjust and grow with the business’s Lean transformation.
  • Ensure that regional and esoteric business unit’s and functional unit’s transformation plans are aligned with the company's goals and accountabilities.
  • Conduct regular reviews of the Company’s lean performance with leadership teams across the organization, providing expectations, performance planning, feedback, training, development and performance discussions with leadership teams across the organization; defining future state requirements for operations and ensures the implementation of Lean strategies and initiatives to effectively meet or exceed business and customer expectations.
  • Assist in developing of lean support teams from within the regional and esoteric business units and various functional units to ensure that the Company’s lean strategy identifies business opportunities and delivers measurable business results. Build bridges within and across the Company’s divisional and functional organizations.
  • Work within the organization at all levels (from front-line to executive suite) utilizing a very hands-on approach to creating value and buy-in as the lead change facilitator for the Company’s Lean Six Sigma transformation.
  • Drive effective on-going communications throughout the organization on the implementation of lean thinking to help drive culture change and advance lean competencies; provide clear and regular communication regarding the Company’s goals and objectives of the lean thinking and to provide a system for measurement of results of lean activities on an ongoing basis.
  • Develop infrastructure tools and supporting materials, including training to support the Company’s lean initiatives. Conduct workshops and other training programs that foster the cross functional deployment of Lean Methodology.
  • Assist with six sigma project and candidate selections, mentor and coach lean leaders, six sigma greenbelts and black belts on their projects assuring the DMAIC process is adhered to and the project gains are sustained.
  • Select, train, and develop Continuous Improvement support staff as well as provide coaching and input on the selection and development of divisional/functional CI leads. Evaluate the talent level of employees and drive actions to develop employee talent and address performance issues.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervise Corporate Lean Continuous Improvement coaching staff, and indirectly supervise all the Regional and Esoteric Business Unit Lean CI leaders supporting divisional/functional initiatives.  Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications:

Education Preferred:

  • BS or BA required
  • MBA or MS preferred

Work Experience:           

  • A minimum of 8-12 years of progressive leadership experience implementing lean principals, driving change and leading continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Requirements: 
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a preference for a bachelor degree in a technical engineering discipline (e.g. manufacturing, mechanical, industrial, process, quality, etc.).
  • Demonstrated successful development and use of Kaizen, Six Sigma, CI, etc. tools/methods:  Development and use of appropriate tools to drive overall improvements in business efficiency/productivity/product cost.
  • Demonstrated track record of Large Scale Continuous Improvement:  Proven cross-functional, large-scale Kaizen leadership skills; a thorough understanding of the full implications of Lean Production Systems as it applies to a business enterprise as a whole.
  • Advanced kaizen training from a recognized leader in Lean Operations such as Toyota or Shingijutsu or similar.
  • Demonstrated operations/process leadership experience
  • Demonstrated leadership skills: Proven track record attracting & developing talent both within and outside direct chain of command. Strategic thinker with strong planning & program management skills.
  • Demonstrated track record of execution: Meeting operating commitments and driving year over year business improvements.
  • Demonstrated Change Management:  Successful experience driving and successfully implementing organizational change on a significant level; Demonstrated ability to make courageous recommendations and decisions to drive significant organizational change; ability to influence others outside direct control; Tenacity and energy in leading change towards an effective work environment.
  • Strong business acumen: Solid understanding of operations and overall business financials.
  • Previous experience working in a global organization, e.g. supporting/conducting business outside of the US in an organization that has multiple sites in various countries.
  • Strong initiative and self-motivation: Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong Analytical Skills:  Ability to analyze and process high volumes of information; manage priorities; follow through; able to prioritize; able to develop clear and well-defined processes.
  • Strong communication, influential and interpersonal skills: Ability to negotiate and communicate across all levels of the organization; ability to communicate clearly and effectively to direct and motivate team and others, maintaining a persuasive and credible presentation style at all levels of the organization; ability to influence those outside of direct control to achieve overall business goals.
  • Must be fluent in English.
  • Strong Project Management skills: Ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent presentation skills: Dynamic, but straight-forward approach with the ability to translate theory into practical application.  Ability to make the complex simple to understand and implement.
  • Broad based background with management experience:  Experience across multiple functional areas and ability to lead in a matrix management structure.
