Sr. Manager, Bioinformatics Software Engineering, the role:

The Senior Manager, Software Engineering Bioinformatics will support and lead programs in technology and software engineering that will help Quest become the global leader in clinical software technology. This role is partnering with the Global Bioinformatics Leadership team and serves as technology thought partner for Quest’s Advanced Diagnostics (ADx) franchises and operations, defining the vision, strategy and roadmap for software used for our ADx operations. Required is an experienced and transformational leader, with a strong track record in leading technology and software teams and utilizing agile methodologies.

This is a critical position reporting directly to the Sr. Director, Bioinformatics Engineering working closely with the global bioinformatics organization and additional ties to Advanced Diagnostics, General Diagnostics, R&D, Franchise teams and Quest IT.

This professional can work 100% remotely.

Job responsibilities:

•         Managing a team of engineers, supporting launch and operation of new and enhanced diagnostic testing services. Oversee task/project execution, risk management, and other processes for ensuring success of the organization.  

•         Drive engagement with critical business partners and customers to ensure alignment of business objectives and functional capabilities. 

•         Partner closely with the Software Engineering and technology teams in Finland and the US to formulate and support the overall technology strategy. 

•         Develop and improve our efforts in technology and software that will help Quest to become the global leader in clinical bioinformatics and software technology

•         Partner with Senior Leadership to support Quest’s business strategy and drive growth 

•         Provide leadership and guidance to the organization to meet key objectives with a particular focus on developing processes that maximize growth

•         Drive results through day-to-day oversight of the Bioinformatics Software Engineering Team’s operations, collaborating closely with colleagues across all key business functions.

•         Evaluate the talent level of employees and drive actions to develop employee talent and address performance issues.

•         Lead and manage cross-functional engineering projects and budgets

•         Leverage industry best practices to drive continuous improvement within bioinformatics and software development process and practices

•         Support culture of continuous improvement with a will to win. Employ agile methodology principles to drive continuous improvement activities and lead initiatives as required.

To qualify, the ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

•         BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics, or equivalent work experience required, advanced degree preferred

•         Minimum 7+ years relevant industry experience

•         A solid background in software development, vendor relationships, technologies, standards, etc.

•         Strong understanding of software best practices and agile methodology to serve as role model for their teams and maintain a high level of quality and scalability on the technical as well as scientific side

•         Proven success in change leadership and creating engaged and inspired teams.

•         Proven extensive technology background, planning and management experience is a must.

•         Adjusting to change with demonstrated experience acting as a change agent for a large organization

•         Influences and communicates effectively with non-technical audiences including senior business executives and managers.

•         Demonstrated leadership skills, project management skills, strong written and verbal skills, and organizational skills.  Proven ability to drive process with indirect authority to project team members.

•         A sharp thinker who quickly grasps the technical implications of business processes, and able to provide valuable insight into the perspectives of users, managers, developers, and other stakeholders

•         Comfortably moves between highly varying levels of abstraction from business strategy to IT strategy to high-level technical design

•         Quickly and reasonably estimates capital, schedule, and human resources costs of proposed solutions. Compares, contrasts, and prioritizes among alternative approaches while assessing risk both quantitatively and qualitatively

•         Team player mindset and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team

•         Goal orientation, self-motivation, and drive to make a positive impact in healthcare

Preferred Qualifications

•         Experience with software development, genomics, or healthcare

•         Experience with sensitive patient data and working under HIPAA regulations

•         Experience working with multi-cultural, international teams

•         MSc/PhD degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics
