Position Description

The Senior Director New England Laboratory Operations is one of the key leaders of the North Region team who oversees technical lab operations for units with over $500M in revenue and over 1,000 employees. Responsible through department directors and managers for quality and timeliness of technical procedures, compliance, and overall lab budget. Basic Purpose: The Director, Reference Laboratory Operations is responsible for ensuring the overall success of the Reference Laboratories operations as measured by meeting/maintaining budget projections; client satisfaction; professional staff development and overall communications within/between the laboratories, as well as with R&D, Sales/Marketing, Finance, Human Resources and IT.  The position reports to the North Region General Manager and is based in Marlborough, MA.

Duties and Responsibilities

•         Oversee and manage the budget and productivity measurements of reference laboratories business operations.

•         Management of key business and strategic lab projects with focus on Operational excellence and accelerating growth. Accelerate Lab Automation and Innovation. Demonstrate business growth focused leadership skills.

•         Coordinate and attend Supervisor/Lab Manager meetings to communicate and develop administrative policies/procedures, morale booster program for lab personnel for all 3 shifts, and monitor set up/report schedule, weekend coverage, client services, safety coverage, and others

•         Work with Human Resources in the areas of personnel hiring, policies and procedure changes, and workman's compensation issues.

•         Ensure open and timely communication between laboratories, Specimen Management, IT, client services, sales, marketing and other laboratories within Quest Diagnostics.

•         Management of frontline, administrative assistants, group leads, supervisors, managers, senior managers and other directors. Requires a highly experienced people focused leader.

•         Monitor turnaround time of all assays by monitoring delivery of samples to the labs and reporting of assays. Work with managers and supervisors to establish preventive measures for delayed reports. Work with Information Technology for changes in software and coordinate lab requirements. Requires a highly experienced patient and customer focused leader.

•         Coordinate Quality Assurance activities by reviewing quality measure and survey reports. Support and coordinate customer driven quality activities in reference laboratory operations and Specimen Management.

•         Provide and collect information from the labs to assist Corporate Safety, Medical Administration, Sales and Marketing, and Human Resources.

•         Attend and participate in monthly R&D meetings, quality review meetings and business meetings

•         Ensures coordination and implementation of standardization initiatives within the Hospital Services labs and other Quest Diagnostics BU's.

•         Provides operational support for internalizing new assays/methods validated by R&D.


•                     Bachelor's degree required. Master’s Degree Preferred.

•                     Advanced degree in Life Sciences and Business Administration desirable.

•                     ASCP certification or CLS license or equivalent required

Work Experience

•         Requires a minimum of ten (10) years' progressive laboratory experience with at least five (5) years of demonstrated leadership and management responsibilities.

•         Strong communications skills, both written and oral, ability to innovate and share ideas and concepts to peers and upper-level management.

•         Certified Black Belt or Green Belt preferred. QMS

•         Experience in Lab Innovations and Lab Automations
