Job Description

Scientist, Forensic Toxicology Laboratory III - Lenexa, KS - Monday-Friday (Possible Weekend)  

Basic Purpose:

The Forensic Scientist III works within the Forensic Toxicology Laboratory and cooperates with and responds to direction from the Supervisor on achieving work objectives including quality, accuracy and productivity.  This position reports to and is managed and evaluated by the Supervisor.  This position is responsible for all technical duties within the appropriate department.  May serve as technical trainer on key functions within the department and create a culture of engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities:


This position works within the Employer Solutions system.  The incumbent is generally responsible for:

1.     Maintain proficiency in all principle duties of a Forensic Scientist II.

2.     Performs maintenance and troubleshooting of all test methods and analytical equipment.

3.     May actively participate in development and implementation of new test procedures.

4.     Capable of complex instrument operation and data interpretation, if applicable.

5.     Serves as a resource of job knowledge for other employees.

6.     Serves as resource for managing the workflow of the department.

7.     Actively assist management and technical trainers with training of employees within the testing area.

8.     Maintain a high level of productivity & quality levels.

9.     Demonstrates good leadership and communication skills.

10.  May be cross trained in other key departments and proficient, able, and willing to support other departments as directed.

11.  May serve as technical trainer on key functions within the department and create a culture of engagement.

12.  May be required to temporarily adjust schedule based on training needs of department.

13.  Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Supervision Exercised: 



Education Required:

Bachelor degree with a major in Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, or Medical Technology. Alternative major –Bachelor degree in other major with a minimum of sixteen (16) semester hours in Chemistry, which include at least six semester hours in inorganic chemistry and are acceptable towards a major in chemistry, sixteen (16) semester hours in Biology which are pertinent to the medical sciences and three (3) semester hours of Mathematics to meet New York State (NYS) requirements. Note, any alternative major must have college transcripts reviewed and approved prior to employment offer by QA department to ensure science education meets regulatory requirements.

Work Experience:

• Minimum of two (2) years laboratory experience.

• Knowledge of methods and procedures used by the laboratory.

Physical and Mental:

• Ability to perform routine and repetitive motions, such as pipetting

• Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time

• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds


• General systems knowledge and data analysis

• Training and experience in performing toxicology testing, maintenance of chain of custody, and understanding proper remedial action in response to problems with equipment or procedures.
