Position Description

The Director, Medical and Biorepository will serve as the CLIA license holder for the Quest Diagnostics TB laboratory as well as the Director of our Biorepository facility. The Medical Director should possess a broad knowledge of clinical medicine, basic medical sciences, clinical laboratory sciences, and operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

CLIA License holder

1.    Medical significance, Interpretation, and Correlation of Data - Provide consultations about the medical significance of clinical laboratory data. Interpret, correlate, and communicate laboratory data to clinical requestors.

2.    Consultations - Provide consultations to physicians regarding the medical significance of laboratory findings as appropriate.

3.    Interaction with Others - Relate and function effectively with applicable accrediting and regulatory agencies, appropriate administrative officials, the medical community, the medical device industry, and the patient population served.

4.    Standards of Performance - Define, implement, and monitor standards of performance in quality control, quality improvement, and cost-effectiveness of the pathology and clinical laboratory service(s).

5.    Monitoring and Correlation of Laboratory Data - Monitor all work performed in the laboratory to determine that medically reliable data are being generated, correlate laboratory data for diagnosis and patient management.

6.    Quality Improvement Responsibilities - Assume responsibility for implementation of the quality improvement plan. The director and professional laboratory personnel must participate as members of the various quality improvement committees of the Company.

7.    Personnel - Ensure that there are sufficient qualified personnel with adequate documented training and experience to meet the needs of the laboratory.

8.    Strategic Planning - Perform planning for setting goals and developing and allocating resources appropriate to the medical environment.

9.    Administrative and Management Responsibilities - Provide effective and efficient administration of the pathology service including budget planning and control with responsible financial management, in accordance with the Company’s' assignment of such responsibilities.

10. Educational Responsibilities - Provide educational programs for the medical and laboratory staff, and participate in educational programs of the Company.

11. Research and Development Responsibilities- If appropriate, plan and direct research and development appropriate to the facility.

12. Safety - Implement a safe laboratory environment in compliance with good practice and applicable regulations.


1.     Design and plan the Advanced Diagnostics biobanking strategy in an environment where managing a large number of diverse samples and tests requires oversight and complex planning. This includes developing a strategy and evaluation process to determine and prioritize sample retention parameters working with various stakeholders.

2.     Design a biobanking facility that can rapidly scale both in the number and complexity of biological sample types.

3.    Build-out and manage a biobank including documented processes and procedures and provide leadership and training for an associated team with an emphasis on storage, tracking, and retrieval of residual samples and extracted DNA. 

4.    Responsible for all aspects of compliance for biobanking function and facility. This includes partnering with various labs across the organization to develop and maintain a regulatory compliant process for identification, consent requirements, and transfer and retrieval of samples to the biobank.

5.    Act as biobanking subject matter expert and provide consultation as needed.

6.    Proactively promote strategic alignment on biobanking strategy both internally and across cross-functional matrixed teams.

7.    Communicate with cross functional teams to provide biobank status updates and regular progress reports, review and approve contracts and manage materials selection.

8.    Implement biobanking best practices to ensure personnel safety and training within industry standards regarding biological sample inventory management and quality control.

9.     Drive continuous improvement.

Supervision Exercised

This role will interface with local teams and quality staff to determine areas for improvement. This role may also lead a small team of technicians as the biobank grows.



•         PhD in Diagnostic Immunology/Microbiology with board certification or a MD degree required

Technical Training or Profession Licensing

•         NY Certificate of Qualification in diagnostic immunology required, or qualifications to obtain a NY CoQ within 6 months of hire.


•         Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of human subject and non-human subject research


•         Excellent written and communication skills

•         Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and grow a team

•         Ability to communicate and collaborate across a matrixed organization

Physical and Mental Requirements

•         10% travel


Work Experience

•         4+ years of laboratory experience plus 2 years working in a biorepository required.
